Points of Access to Trails

Ragged Mountain Trails Access Points

The Route 17 access in Rockport is the approach for Spruce Mountain to the south, and Ragged Mountain to the north.

The Mount Pleasant Farm access in Union, off Mt. Pleasant Road, provides access to the Pleasant and Spruce Mountains section. Parking for the section is also available at the Path's crossing of Mt. Pleasant Street in Rockport.

The Thorndike Brook access, on Hope Street in Rockport, gives access to Ragged Mountain on the Thorndike Brook section.

The Barnestown access, on Barnestown Road in Camden, offers access to Bald Mountain to the north, and Ragged Mountain to the south.

Walker Ridge Access to Frye Mountain Loop

This Access is located in the Frye Mountain Wildlife Management Area in the town of Montville. On Route 220, approximately 6-3/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 3, look for the gravel-based Walker Ridge Road which turns northeast. (Delorme Atlas, Map 14, A-1) The brown state-owned buildings for the Management Area are visible from Rte. 220 at this intersection. The Georges Highland Path crosses the Walker Ridge Road 0.45 miles from the corner of Rte. 220. The trailhead kiosk is on the trail to the right, 100 ft. in from the road.

Thomaston Town Forest, Baker Woods, and Oyster River Bog

The Thomaston Water Treatment Facility on Booker Street in Thomaston accesses the southern terminus of the Path and the Thomaston Town Forest.

Baker Woods access is on Beechwood Street in Thomaston, near Wiley Corner, and offers access to Baker Woods and the Oyster River Bog sections.

The Route 90 access in Rockland provides access to the northern terminus of the Oyster River Bog section.

Gibson Trails Access Point

Just south of the St. George River's crossing of Rte. 131 in Searsmont Village, take Maine Rte. 173 west 1.9 miles. Shortly after the Brown Road bears left from Rte. 173, look for a plowed road angling left and slightly downhill in a semi-open area. This is the start of the Ripley Corner Road. Park very carefully in this area.

From the parking area, walk down the plowed portion of the Ripley Corner Road, and cross the St. George River on the "Iron Bridge" in 0.17 miles. Just after the bridge, the "Old County Road" bears right, and is used as a snowmobile trail. Follow the "Old County Road" 0.3 miles, and watch for the "Hiking and Skiing Trails" sign on the right, at the start of the Gibson Preserve. Maps should be available at a small kiosk just in off the road.
