Frye Mountain Hike

At the top

The first guided hike on the new Frye Mountain Trail took place on September 11, 2003. The weather was beautiful and approximately 20 people joined Trails Coordinator Dave Getchell and Assistant Trails Coordinator Brendan Curran for the hike.

The trail was lined with sturdy stone walls crisscrossing the landscape, some were only one stone wide. The walls were a great reminder that, though the property is now completely wooded, it was once managed as farms by several families, including the Frye family.

Stone Wall

We also found a small American chestnut tree among a stand of beech trees! It was near a pile of old fence posts, thought by some of the hikers to be chestnut.

There were also a few hornet nests strategically located along the trail. Luckily our leaders scouted this ahead of time and the hikers were diverted from the nests! (No casualties!!)

We hope to have a number of photos of our watershed available from time-to-time.

In the meantime, should you have photographs that you feel would be appropriate to display on our Website, please contact the Executive Director.
